Meet Some Ambassadors

Bindi Irwin - Actress and Television Presenter

Bindi Irwin

Climate change is a very big issue facing our planet today. However, I believe that like most problems in the world today, climate change stems from one big problem which seems to be the ‘elephant in the room’ that no-one wants to talk about. This problem is our ever expanding human population. Only 100 years ago mother earth was home to 1.5 billion people, and now it is home to over 7 billion people. These are scary figures as earth only has so many resources and cannot keep up with our ever growing population. I do not believe that there is one answer and it is not an issue to be taken lightly, however it is an issue that must be addressed. We need to start discussing solutions now. Together we can make a difference.

Noni Hazlehurst - Award-winning actress

Noni Hazlehurst

One by one we need to speak up. Don't ever think that one woman can't make a difference. If enough individuals say and do the same thing they become a crowd. No one is special but everyone is unique.

Leah Purcell - Film, television and theatre actor, singer, director and playwright

Leah Purcell

Multi-award winning performer, Leah has a committment to the Arts and cultural activism. She is renowned for her ability to inspire others.

Lish Fejer - ABC TV's Carbon Cop and developer of Green It Yourself

Lish Fejer

I love the whole idea of 1millionwomen. It’s all about action, and women are the original action-figure heroes. We get things done.
What I like to get done are green DIY jobs. I’m not the handiest tool in the shed but there is something intensely satisfying about it.
Maybe it’s because it works - it increases comfort and brings down your energy bills. Maybe it’s because you’ve done something that you thought you couldn’t do. Maybe it’s because the hour you’ve spent doing a green DIY job has a lasting impact and isn’t gobbled up by hungry mouths in 15 minutes.
My aim is to get 1millionwomen into the shed and doing a bit of GIY. There’s a reason blokes spend lots of time in there. It’s good. Really good.

Katie Noonan - Entertainer

Katie Noonan

1 million women

Since becoming a mother I have thought more and more about wanting to help create a beautiful safe world for my precious children. The only way to do this is to make a change in your own world.

Switch to solar. Install rainwater tanks. Say no to plastic bags. Walk more. Use public transport more. Recycle and reuse. Take a mug to your cafe. Car pool. Switch your car to gas/electric. Plant trees. Plant vegies. Eat less meat. Carbon offset your travel. Switch to green energy. Join 1 Million Women! Do whatever you can to help keep this beautiful planet beautiful.

I am passionate about making a change in my world and I urge you to do the same in yours - in the words of our great aussie troubador Kev Carmody - from little things big things grow.

with love,
Katie Noonan

Ms Anne Sherry AO - Chief Executive Officer, Carnival Australia

Ultimately changing the world starts at an individual level and each of us need to do our bit.  Additionally, those of us with authority and corporate influence need to make sure we take a leadership role.

Maeve O'Meara - Award-winning food and cooking author, journalist, broadcaster, television producer and presenter

Maeve O'Meara

When graduating from primary school, my then 12 year old son's ambition was to "make the world a better place and have fun along the way". I reckon that's enough reason to dive in and see what we can do to leave the planet in good shape - and rather than seeing the journey in a negative light - what one gives up - its actually incredibly positive. In a food sense we need to be much more aware of what we eat, where it comes from and how to look after our resources.

Bernie Hobbs - Science Presenter and Judge, ABC Radio and The New Inventors

Bernie Hobbs

We can change the way the world works with our everyday decisions – what we buy/drive/eat/do for fun. Giving 1 million women the facts on how these actions affect the planet helps us make choices that will slow climate change, and send a big “clean up your act” to our leaders.

Layne Beachley - 7x World surfing champion, environmental campaigner, Layne Beachley Aim for the Stars Foundation

Layne Beachley

As a surfer, I've lived in the water my whole life. I love the ocean and I love nature and I don't like what we're doing to it. We need to accept responsibility and make changes - a small amount of change to achieve a huge impact - and we're running out of time to do so.

Melinda Schnieder - Award winning country recording artist

Melinda Schnieder

I'm proud that my song Courageous is the 1MW anthem as it's about women being strong and committed and that's a powerful force to be reckoned with.

As a joining force, united as women, One Million Women is an amazing opportunity for us all to take part in really making a change for the benefit of ourselves, our planet, our children and future generations. A sustainable lifestyle has always been paramount to me and there are so many small changes we can make in our everyday lives that will have an everlasting impact on Climate change. My business Pure Food Cooking is all about giving people tips and ideas on how to make the most of their time spend in the kitchen, easy and creative way for shopping for food, and recipe combinations that save money, wastage and use everyday seasonal local ingredients. All it takes is a thought everyday on how we can make a difference in each little action that we do.

“On a first date we went walking along the beach and I remember thinking how great this guy was that every time he saw rubbish along the coastline he would pick it up to put it in the bin– it impressed me so much that this man cared about the environment the same way I did and was willing to do the little things to make a positive difference – I ended up marrying him. As a surfer my husband has always cared how our living impacts on our environment and now we have a baby boy we are even more aware of reducing our carbon footprint – we want to be good role models for our children”

Beginning producing the cabaret show Women in Voice in Brisbane over 20 years ago has shown me just what can be achieved by a small group of self determined women. I am thrilled to be part of another and much larger collective of women with such lofty ideals. Like many of us, managing being a busy working mum can be challenging to stay on track with your core beliefs. This feeling of solidarity makes me feel that those goals are indeed possible!

Our planet is hurting, the earth is heating up at a faster rate than ever before. I just couldn’t sit back and not do something to help.

A crisis as deep and threatening as this presents us all with choices and opportunities. We can cross our fingers, leave it to others, and hope it will all work out for the best. The Hon Gail Gago - Minister for State/Local Government Relations, the Status of Women, Consumer Affairs Government of South Australia

Individuals making change in their everyday lives are one of the driving forces behind climate action. As a former Minister for Environment I encouraged grassroots change by helping make South Australia the first state to ban thin checkout style plastic bags; promote recycling by doubling container deposits, instigate a substantial food waste recycling process in homes and put disposal of e-waste on the national agenda. The smallest changes can make a difference.

Cheryl Batagol - Chairman, Environment Protection Agency Victoria

Cheryl Batagol

In a world where we expect one third more people on our earth than there is now, we can no longer believe we are entitled to have what we want or even need. Our culture of entitlement may be OK for a small population on a small planet but if we do not take personal responsibility for the impacts our current "entitled" lifestyle is having on our future generations then history will regard our generation as the worst despoilers. Together one million women taking personal responsibility is a superb example of how we can go beyond our own backyard, come together and make sure that we can create a massive wave of change.

Cassandra Kelly - joint CEO Pottinger

Cassandra Kelly

Climate change is an issue that we cannot deny nor ignore. Women are known for our ability to adapt and change and right now there is an urgent need for us to encourage others to do the same. I believe we all have a responsibility to care for our children and the environment. I have always been concerned with the unnecessary use of dangerous chemicals in our world. I believe that by making a very large number of small changes we can significantly reduce environmental damage, my contribution to this philosophy has been the creation of my own company Wild Child which produces products as close to nature as we can make them. As a natural extension to my working life this campaign provides a great platform to effectively communicate and participate in helping to reduce carbon emissions.

It is the simple everyday choices that each and every Australian can make starting today that will make a difference to the world we live in NOW”.

Joy Burch MLA - Minister for Women of the ACT

Joy Burch MLA

Climate change continues to influence the lives of women in the ACT. It affects the decisions we make about our own lives as well as those women in years to come. By working together with women from across Australia, we can help to drastically reduce the influence of climate change. It’s in our hands.

Penny Farnsworth - Deputy Chief Executive, Department of Climate Change, Environment, Energy and Water

Penny Farnsworth

One million women can't be wrong (or if they were, who would argue with them). Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing the world today. Women are uniquely placed to help shape and guide our response to this challenge. Due in no small part to the efforts of our sisters before us we now hold influential positions across all levels in the workforce. But, equally if not more importantly, many of us have the opportunity to inspire younger generations to work towards lessening our negative impact on the environment. As workers, as mothers, as teachers, as homemakers and as partners, we can make a difference. And through campaigns such as the 1 million women campaign we will make a difference - we will leave an enduring and positive legacy.

Janette Lindsay - Deputy Director and Associate Director Education, the Fenner School of Environment & Society, the Australian National University

"We live in the most amazing country in the world - so let's as women lead the change and protect Australia for future generations.

Amanda McKenzie - Campaign Ambassador

Wendy Machin - President, NRMA

Wendy Machin

Over the past few years I’ve become increasingly aware of the need to reduce the impact my family has on the environment. These days we own a hybrid and diesel car and when I can, I’ll choose to ride my motorbike to save fuel and money. Other things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint include taking the bus to work or car-pooling with friends.

That’s why this month I’ve decided to get onboard with the 1 Million Women program. The program created for women by women is designed to make us more conscious about our every day decisions and the carbon footprint we leave behind.

Kat Wray - Campaign Ambassador, Author of Ecoempire blog

Kat Wray

My name is Kat and I’m just an everyday chick who decided that I would prove to myself (and others!) that being sustainable is easy. I started a little blog on my discoveries and adventures to educate and inspire friends and family, ecoempire.org. I figured if I could inspire just a few people to be sustainable, then I’m making an impact. As I embark on a new chapter of my sustainable life (parenthood) I’m out to prove that life’s little excuses shouldn’t get in the way of being a sustainable parent or human being. It doesn’t have to be hard, or boring, or daggy. As I often say – I’m creatively sustainable!

Frances Whiting - Favourite Queensland Newspaper Columnist

Frances Whiting

I think for a long time I lived my life in complete disregard of this beautiful planet we call home.
I didn't litter or knowingly pollute the air or water, but neither did I take real, practical steps to make a difference.
The growing, global awareness of climate change, and having children, made me stop being so complacent, and I'm glad of it.
But I wasn't sure of what practical steps I could take, and 1millionwoman has given them to me.
So thank you, for helping me help our planet.

Anya Phelan - CIEAM Research Scholar, Queensland University of Technology; Certified Black Belt Nia Teacher

Women and children will be disproportionatly impacted by climate change, particularly women and children in developing countries. Women in Australia therefore have a responsibility to stand up and speak out for those who don't have a voice or the power to effect change, which we do and can.

Bianca Galgut - Student at Ascham School

Bianca Galgut

Too many teens are taking our environment for granted. We are a world driven by technology, and yet climate change is still an immense issue that is often overlooked. Climate action means using our power to create a sustainable environment which will ultimately benefit us and future generations to come.

BEING MUM TO 2 SMALL CHILDREN, I WAS VERY MOVED BY NATALIE’S CAMPAIGN RUN IN KINDERGARDENS. WHAT A POWERFUL THING IN TERMS OF MAKING A DIFFERENCE! I BELIEVE EDUCATION IS INSTRUMENTAL AND THE CAMPAIGN HAS A HUGE POTENTIAL TO INSPIRE WOMEN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE THROUGH THEIR ROLE AS EDUCATORS.

Tanu Sridhar - Student at Hurlstone Agricultural High School

Tanu Sridhar

Climate change is threatening the lives of millions and has already started to affect all of us through the increased chance of storms, floods and other disasters. Its inevitability is looming over us all, but I believe that it can be fought if we unite as young people, and as a community and each do our bit. It’s all the little things we change in our lifestyles that will make the difference and I am excited to play my part in raising this awareness. We are so privileged to live on such a breathtaking planet, but it is humanity that is pillaging the Earth. It’s our responsibility to change ourselves so we damage the environment less, because otherwise it’s us who won’t be able to enjoy this world in the future.

Shona Brown - 10,000 Teens Ambassador - Penrhos College

Shona Brown

Climate change is an issue that my generation is going to have to deal with in our future. I want to make a stand against climate change now, and not sweep it under the rug until later on. The problem is only going to get worse so why waste our opportunity to create a healthier, cleaner environment for everyone to live in. We need to preserve the world we have and create a more sustainable way of living to be able to coexist with the wonderful natural surroundings we have.

Hayley Baker - 10,000 Teens Ambassador - Penrhos College

Climate change is a huge issue today, and one that is just going to get worse. The scariest part - it is us who are going to feel the effects during our adulthood! It is so important that we stand together and fight this growing problem before it is too late and we ruin the planet for us and our future generations. I am taking a stand against climate change because we see every day all the beautiful surroundings this world has to offer us, and it isn't fair for us to mindlessly destroy it... we need to preserve it!

Jess Taggart - Student at Tamworth High School

Jess Taggart

The world around us makes us who we are and without saving the environment there is no world for me, my family, my friends and anyone in the future. Climate change is needed to be urgently attended to. I may only be one person but I have a loud voice and am willing to take action to make a change to the world, as it is important to me to not let mother nature suffer and the small changes I can make don't change life dramatically, and its easy for everyone to do.

Katherine Ly - Student at Hurlstone Agricultural High School

Katherine Ly

Now, as many people around the world are aware of climate change and environmental issues caused by humanity, we have to work together to push for a greener, cleaner future. It's up to our generation to step up and really make a difference in the world by working together to achieve the same goal, to protect our environment and our future.

Lauren Rosillo - Student at Santa Sabina College

Lauren Rosillo

Climate change is a huge issue on a global scale and to think it could destroy our beautiful world is honestly tragic. However, through my actions and those of my friends, family and community, I know that we can begin to make a change for the better.

Melany Toombs - Student at Abbotsleigh School

Melany Toombs

As a 16 year old girl living in a wonderfully fortunate country, I think it important that we acknowledge climate change for what it really is: a reminder that our actions are intrinsically linked to a broader, all-encompassing environment and the global community. More importantly, climate change reminds us of the power of youth spreading the word about climate change, engaging in meaningful discussions and enacting change in our communities.

Climate change is one of those things which isn't blaringly obvious to those who don’t know it’s there. But for the growing majority, it’s something that matters and something that needs to be enforced continually. We’re a generation who can enforce that change and empower others our age that we can make a difference and that above all else, it’s worth it.

Izzy Manfield - Student - University of Queensland

Being a uni student, everything in my life at the moment is working towards the future. Being a 10,000 teens ambassador means I can help protect the future of our planet.

Beth Parsons - Student at Monte Sant'Angelo Mercy College

I see it as our generation's responsibility to unite as women, as friends, and as a community, to fight against the devastating effects our society is having upon our environment today. We must realise what a breathtaking world we are so privileged to be a part of, and learn to live in harmony with every aspect of it. Together, we can make change in everyday aspects of our life, and that change will inspire more change, and more change, until everyone is united in the battle to live sustainably and protect our wonderful earth

Lauren Whateley - Student at Santa Sabina College

Val French - Campaign Ambassador

Like many other ambassadors who have lived a long while I have fought many battles: the rights of women to work and to a higher education, their equal rights in the workplace, the rights of the mentally ill, of prisoners, of carers, of older people….but no abuse or social injustice can equate to what we are facing now with climate change…but if we care enough one million women should surely be able to make a difference.

Victoria O'Connor - MBA Solutions

In a world where we expect one third more people on our earth than there is now, we can no longer believe we are entitled to have what we want or even need. Our culture of entitlement may be OK for a small population on a small planet but if we do not take personal responsibility for the impacts our current "entitled" lifestyle is having on our future generations then history will regard our generation as the worst despoilers. Together one million women taking personal responsibility is a superb example of how we can go beyond our own backyard, come together and make sure that we can create a massive wave of change.

I believe that Climate change is an issue that urgently needs to be addressed before it is too late. The world is a beautiful place that due to its fragility can rapidly deteriorate if humanity does not preserve it. It is my hope that one day everyone will do their part for the environment by living a sustainable life

Radhika Bhatia - Student at Abbotsleigh School

I believe taking action against climate change, although often disregarded, is immensely important. We, as humans, must take responsibility for what electricity and advancements in technology have done to this Earth, and work towards undoing this damage. Climate change has already had dramatic effects on our environment. Every day, on the news, we hear about extreme weather changes and melting ice caps, effects of climate change that will only worsen over time. Taking action now is vitally important, as we must protect our Earth for ourselves, for the animals and plants that inhabit it and for future generations who will have to live in the world that we have created.

Lish Fejer - ABC TV's Carbon Cop and developer of Green It Yourself

Women make 70% of the consumer decisions around the home and we are natural networkers. Climate Coolers reason for being is to engage the women of Australia on Climate Change and our belief is the 1 Million Women campaign will do just this.

I believe in taking climate action because I believe there has to be a balance between providing the present needs of society and preserving our environment for future generations- a balance that has not been achieved. If anything, climate change reminds us all that our actions have consequences and while our actions may be able to devastate our environment; our actions can also preserve all that is around us and inspire others to do the same.

I am passionate about making a change in my world and I urge you to do the same in yours - in the words of our great aussie troubador Kev Carmody - from little things big things grow.

with love,

Maeve O'Meara

When graduating from primary school, my then 12 year old son's ambition was to "make the world a better place and have fun along the way". I reckon that's enough reason to dive in and see what we can do to leave the planet in good shape - and rather than seeing the journey in a negative light - what one gives up - its actually incredibly positive. In a food sense we need to be much more aware of what we eat, where it comes from and how to look after our resources.

Sarah Oakes - Editor, Sunday Life

I’m personally dedicated to reducing my carbon footprint and encouraging those around me to think more seriously about their own. This group reminds me not to beat myself up for mistakes but to strive toward the environmental goals I hold dear to my heart.

Jess Taggart - Student at Tamworth High School

The world around us makes us who we are and without saving the environment there is no world for me, my family, my friends and anyone in the future. Climate change is needed to be urgently attended to. I may only be one person but I have a loud voice and am willing to take action to make a change to the world, as it is important to me to not let mother nature suffer and the small changes I can make don't change life dramatically, and its easy for everyone to do.
